In celebration of Women’s Month, a webinar held on 28 August 2024 highlighted the vital role of women in science diplomacy and explored pathways toward greater gender inclusivity in this crucial field. The event brought together a diverse group of stakeholders to discuss the challenges and opportunities surrounding gender equality in science diplomacy, a key area for addressing global scientific and technological issues.
Exploring the challenges and opportunities for gender inclusivity
The webinar focused on the barriers women face in the male-dominated field of science diplomacy and discussed strategies for fostering a more inclusive environment. Participants engaged in critical discussions about the systemic challenges that prevent women from fully participating in science diplomacy, how policies can be reshaped to create an enabling environment, and the impact of effective science diplomacy on enhancing and increasing women’s participation in the scientific community.

The event featured a keynote address by the Deputy Minister of Science, Technology, and Innovation, Ms Nomalungelo Gina, who shared her perspectives on the current state of gender inclusivity in science diplomacy and highlighted government initiatives aimed at promoting equality.
